Orchids...Ahh..
I just attended an orchid lecture. With that knowledge I would like to share a few tidbits of information to share as a fellow garden and plant lover.
Orchids have over 250,000 kinds of varieties. The orchid has the smallest seed known. While the famous coconut has the largest seed known to this good earth.
Lighting
Orchids prefer indirect light. They thrive under these condtions. So, read carefully and let's grow some orchids! Never put an orchid in full sun exposure. The plant should be at least three feet away from any window. I grew an orchid in a north window exposure on my piano five feet away from the window. I had great results and the bloom surprised me!
Heat and temperature
Orchids love to maintain a temperature of 65-74 degrees. This temperature is a must for them to do well and bloom. Too hot of temperature will result in terminate of the plant. Then on the other hand too cold will cause the same status as well to die.
Some plant lovers like to place their orchid in a bathroom. The humidity from the shower is ideal for an orchid. The light and the air temperature seems to make the orchid feel like it took a shower! So, Give it a try and see your blooms of the orchid.
Watering
Water for the orchid is essential. Only an ample amount of water is necessary. I would water once a week. Then using lukewarm, non salt water of two cups to the orchid. Or the old fashioned feel to the touch doesn't apply to the orchid. On the two cups of water will work for you. Don't over water! The plant will become soggy and die.
Finale
In conclusion, when you purchase an orchid make sure the plant looks healthy when you buy it. This is the key. You don't want to waste your money right off the bat.
Choose a color you like. Start by growing an orchid in the kitchen. This is where I have had the best luck with my orchid.
The favorite place to buy an orchid is at Cautus and Tropicals. Then in the fall time of year the Red Butte Gardens on the Univeristy of Utah campus has their annual show of orchids.
Good luck my fellow plant lovers.
